Trump and Republicans Shut Down the Government, Throwing West Virginians Into Chaos

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 1, 2025

Last night, despite Republican control of the White House and both chambers of Congress, federal government funding lapsed after Donald Trump and West Virginia Republicans refused to get serious about avoiding a shutdown and stopping West Virginian’s health insurance costs from skyrocketing.

Meanwhile, Democrats were in Washington, D.C., ready to negotiate and ensure health care premiums don’t double for 49,000 West Virginians and that 69,000 don’t lose their health insurance entirely.

Voters across West Virginia know this is a Trump Shutdown. After voting to cut health care for millions of Americans, Republicans are now trying to raise health care costs for millions more.

In response to Donald Trump and West Virginia Republicans forcing a government shutdown, West Virginia Democratic Party Chair Mike Pu

shkin released the following statement:

“Donald Trump and West Virginia Republicans refused to negotiate and ensure that health care expenses don't double for 49,000 families, who are already struggling under Donald Trump’s economy. While Republicans refuse to even show up to work, Democrats stand united: cancel the cuts, lower costs, and save health care for hard-working West Virginian’s. Trump is playing politics with West Virginian’s livelihoods. Democrats won’t stop fighting to lower costs and save health care.”
