WV Democratic Party Warns Trump’s Primetime Election Speech Is a Dangerous Prelude to Federal Election  Interference

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia Democratic Party Chairman Mike Pushkin today condemned President Donald Trump’s primetime address on elections as an alarming attempt to lay the political groundwork for unprecedented and unnecessary federal interference in this fall’s elections.

“West Virginians—and all Americans—should be deeply concerned by what we heard from the President tonight,” Pushkin said. “This wasn’t a speech about protecting democracy. It was a speech that appeared designed to justify extraordinary federal intervention in elections that are administered safely and securely by the states.”

Pushkin said the President’s continued fixation on the 2020 election demonstrates an unwillingness to accept the results of an election that has been repeatedly reviewed, litigated, audited, and upheld.

“For nearly six years, Donald Trump has refused to accept his defeat in the 2020 presidential election,” Pushkin said. “His campaign and allies filed dozens of lawsuits challenging the results, and those challenges overwhelmingly failed. His own Attorney General found no evidence of widespread fraud that could have changed the outcome. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency described the 2020 election as ‘the most secure in American history,’ and numerous state audits reached the same conclusion.”

Despite those findings, Pushkin said, the President continues to recycle disproven claims while raising new allegations without demonstrating evidence that votes were altered or election outcomes were changed.

“Americans deserve elections based on facts—not conspiracy theories,” Pushkin continued. “Tonight’s speech appeared to blur the distinction between foreign efforts to influence public opinion and actual interference with voting systems. Our own intelligence agencies have consistently concluded that while foreign governments have attempted influence operations, they found no evidence that voting infrastructure, vote tabulation, or election results were altered in 2020.”

Pushkin warned that the timing of the speech—just months before the 2026 midterm elections—is particularly troubling.

“Republicans know they face a difficult political environment this November. Instead of earning the support of voters, President Trump appears determined to undermine confidence in the election before a single ballot has been cast. That should concern every American, regardless of party.”

He added that free and fair elections depend on public confidence in the integrity of the electoral process.

“Our democracy depends on the peaceful acceptance of election results. Repeatedly telling Americans that they cannot trust elections without credible evidence weakens our institutions and divides our country.”

Pushkin said the President’s renewed focus on relitigating the 2020 election also serves as a convenient distraction from the challenges Americans are facing today.

“Instead of talking about how to lower the cost of groceries, bring down gas prices, strengthen our health care system, or provide certainty in a world made more dangerous by conflict in Iran and elsewhere, Donald Trump wants America to relive the 2020 election,” Pushkin said. “He’s obsessed with the past because it’s easier than explaining the present. West Virginians are worried about paying their bills, affording prescription drugs, and keeping food on the table—not indulging another round of baseless conspiracy theories about an election that has long been settled.”

Pushkin concluded by calling on election officials of both parties to continue administering elections fairly and independently.

“West Virginia’s county clerks, poll workers, and election officials work hard every election to ensure that every eligible voter can cast a ballot and that every lawful vote is counted. They deserve our gratitude—not unfounded accusations. The West Virginia Democratic Party will oppose any effort to use fear, misinformation, or federal overreach to interfere with the administration of our state’s elections.”

“Democracy only works when every eligible American can vote freely, every lawful vote is counted accurately, and every candidate accepts the will of the people. That principle must remain above politics.”
