West Virginia Democratic Party Congratulates Democrats Nationwide on Historic Election Wins

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 5, 2025

CHARLESTON, WV — The West Virginia Democratic Party today congratulated Democratic candidates across the country on a historic night of election victories that saw Democrats flip red seats at the municipal, legislative, and executive levels — including in areas long thought to be safely Republican.

Democrats not only held key seats but expanded the map, winning in suburban and rural communities alike by speaking directly to working families about the economy, the rising cost of living, and the ongoing threat posed by Donald Trump’s failed policies that would rip away health care and drive up prices for groceries and everyday consumer goods.

One of the most encouraging signs came out of neighboring Virginia, where Democratic performance increased in nearly every county — even in deeply red rural counties where Republicans have long dominated. That across-the-board improvement shows that when Democrats show up, organize, and talk about real people’s lives, voters respond.

“Last night was proof that voters want competent, compassionate leadership — and they found it in Democratic women up and down the ballot,” said West Virginia Democratic Party Vice Chair Teresa Toriseva. “From school boards to statehouses, Democratic candidates were disciplined, fearless, and focused on issues that matter to families — good jobs, accessible health care, reproductive freedom, and safe communities. Voters rewarded that. It was a historic night for Democratic women, and it should inspire more women in West Virginia to step forward.”

West Virginia Democratic Party Chair Mike Pushkin said the results should serve as a flashing green light for Democrats in the Mountain State.

“If you’re a Democrat and thinking of running for office in West Virginia, now is the time,” Pushkin said. “What we saw last night is that when Democrats make it about people — about wages, health care, schools, and protecting freedoms — we can win in places Republicans have taken for granted. Voters are tired of being divided and distracted while their costs go up. They’re ready for candidates who will fight for them. So if you want to be a part of the fight to protect our democracy and get West Virginia moving in the right direction, consider putting your name on the ballot by going to www.wvdemocrats.com/run.

Pushkin noted that in addition to the Governor's office, Democrats flipped 13 seats in the Virginia legislature by focusing relentlessly on GOP efforts to end the Affordable Care Act, roll back Medicaid protections, and the failure of Republicans to deliver for working families.

“Trump-era Republican economics have left working people paying more and getting less,” Pushkin said. “Democrats talked about that. We told the truth about what MAGA policies have done to health care and costs, and voters backed us.”

The West Virginia Democratic Party said it will be using last night’s results to recruit, train, and support candidates at every level ahead of 2026, with an emphasis on local races, rural outreach, and women candidates.

“We see the momentum,” Delegate Kayla Young (D – Kanawha) . “What happened last night in Virginia, in red towns, in county-level races — can happen here. West Virginians deserve candidates who show up and fight for child care, affordable health care, and putting people first. And Democrats are doing exactly that.”
