National Election Results Show Strong Momentum for Democrats Heading into 2026

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 4, 2026

Charleston, WV — The West Virginia Democratic Party says the results from last night’s special and primary elections across the country demonstrate growing momentum for Democrats heading into the 2026 General Election.

From competitive special elections to record-breaking primary turnout, Democrats are energized and mobilizing voters in key states, while strong candidates are emerging in races that could reshape the political landscape next November.

One of the most notable results came from Arkansas, where Democrat Alex Holladay won a special election in a district previously held by Republicans, flipping the seat and signaling that voters in traditionally conservative areas are increasingly open to Democratic leadership focused on working families.

In Texas, the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate saw historic participation, with James Talarico winning the nomination in what became the largest midterm primary turnout for Democrats in the state since 1970. Notably, more Democrats voted in the primary than Republicans — a sign of the enthusiasm building among Democratic voters.

In North Carolina, former Democratic Governor Roy Cooper secured the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate. Cooper, who has never lost an election in his career, now gives Democrats a strong opportunity to compete for and potentially flip a Republican-held seat in November.

Closer to home, former West Virginia State Senator Richard Ojeda won the Democratic primary in North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District, advancing to the general election with strong grassroots support.

West Virginia Democratic Party Vice Chair Teresa Toriseva praised Ojeda’s victory and his continued commitment to public service. “Richard Ojeda is a son of Appalachia and a combat veteran who has never stopped fighting for working people. He brings the kind of fight and straight talk we need to stand up to the billionaire class in Washington, and we need that voice in Congress. North Carolina and West Virginia will benefit from his continued public service, and I’m thrilled to see this win.”

West Virginia Democratic Party Chair Mike Pushkin said the results across the country reflect a growing demand for leadership that puts people ahead of corporate interests. “Last night’s results make one thing clear: Voters are energized and ready for change. From Arkansas to Texas to North Carolina, we’re seeing Democrats win tough races, turn out voters in record numbers, and nominate candidates who are ready to fight for working families. The energy and momentum we’re seeing across the country should have Republicans very concerned heading into 2026. When Democrats organize, compete everywhere, and focus on the issues that matter most to everyday Americans, we win.”

Pushkin added that Democrats in West Virginia will continue building on that momentum by engaging voters and presenting a clear alternative to the failed policies that have left too many working families behind.
