West Virginia State Capitol

WHY: The statue of the late Sen. Robert C. Byrd, who was honored by the West Virginia Legislature as the “West Virginian of the 20th Century,” represents much more than just the man who grew up poor in the southern coalfields and became one of the most powerful figures in American political history. It represents the foundational principles of our Republic.
Byrd, a devout student and advocate of the U.S. Constitution, was a fearless and peerless champion of the democratic institutions of rule of law, separate but equal branches of government, consensus-building and compromise, civility and decorum - ideals that can at times seem under siege these days on the state and national level.
Former staff and friends of the late Sen. Byrd are gathering at his statue in the rotunda of the statehouse in Charleston to acknowledge those quintessential West Virginia Values he lived - honesty, integrity, civility, working across political aisles for the greater good, and service before self.
