WVDP Criticizes Trump's Iran Deal

For Immediate Release June 18, 2026

Trump Went From Demanding “Unconditional Surrender” to Handing Iran a $300 Billion Payday

CHARLESTON, WV - West Virginia Democratic Party Chair Mike Pushkin today blasted President Donald Trump’s Iran ceasefire agreement, noting that even prominent Republicans are warning that the deal leaves Iran stronger, America’s allies weaker, and U.S. credibility badly damaged.

“When Donald Trump launched this conflict, he declared on Truth Social that there would be no deal with Iran except ‘unconditional surrender,’” Pushkin said. “Now, after months of military escalation, the loss of American lives, the deaths of thousands of civilians across the region, billions of dollars in destruction, and enormous risks to our service members and allies, he has settled for a deal that even Republicans are calling “the worst foreign policy disaster in decades.”

Under the reported framework, Iran would receive access to a $300 billion international redevelopment fund intended to rebuild infrastructure damaged during the conflict.

“The irony is staggering,” Pushkin said. “American lives have been lost. Thousands of civilians have been killed. Entire communities have been devastated. The United States and its allies have spent billions helping destroy portions of Iran’s infrastructure, only to turn around and facilitate a $300 billion fund to rebuild what was destroyed. That’s not a victory. That’s an admission that after all the threats, all the bombing, all the death, and all the disruption to the global economy, Trump failed to achieve the objectives that supposedly justified the conflict in the first place.”

Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana has been among the most outspoken critics of the agreement.

“The details I’ve seen so far look awful,” Cassidy said. “This will go down as a tremendous foreign policy blunder. Iran ends up stronger, our allies in the region are weaker, and Iran has learned that if they’re willing to grab that Strait of Hormuz and choke it off they can get the western world to dance to their tune.”

Pushkin said Cassidy’s criticism cuts to the heart of the problem.

“When even Republican senators are saying Iran has learned it can threaten the world’s energy supply and be rewarded for it, that’s not deterrence. That’s the opposite of deterrence.”

“Americans deserve a simple answer: What exactly did we accomplish?” Pushkin said. “If Iran remains governed by the same regime, retains influence throughout the region, receives a massive redevelopment package, and emerges with renewed leverage over global energy markets, what was the point of this war?”
